No Reservations : favorite accident of 2007

Dixie and I occasionally hit the dollar theater and just see whatever is playing. I’d never heard of No Reservations before we walked into the lobby last summer and bought tickets. We don’t watch TV, so unless we see a film trailer when we go to another movie, we generally don’t hear about what’s coming out.
Anyway, I thought from the poster: "Oh, here’s one of those films you watch once and then completely forget about." But, I was wrong. Instead of turning out to be some silly romantic comedy full of impossible situations and loud performances, it turned out to be one of the most thoughtful films I’ve seen in the last couple of years. The mixture of tragedy, comedy & romance was kept in perfect balance.
I’m revisiting the film now because Dixie and I just bought it on DVD and watched it again. The acting is great (which really surprised me from Aeon Flux’s CZ Jones). The story is good. The world of five star chefs interesting. The little orphan girl is adorable, but not overly cute. The romance is believable. You are tossed back and forth between sorrow and laughter (so much like life), but the film is filled and ends with hope.
The scoring is instantly recognizable as Phillip Glass, who did a wonderful job on this film as well as The Illusionist last year. There is also a great set of songs and Italian opera tunes that only accentuate an already beautiful film.
Bravo! to the creative team and cast on my favorite accident of 2007.
