The Necromancer
a fugue macabre for piano or organ

The Necromancer : a fugue macabre went through about five revisions before I was completely done with it, but it easily became my favorite of my own keyboard works. I wrote it in the spirit of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas, and Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens : a little dark, but mostly fun.
A necromancer is a wizard that performs his magic through some kind of converse with the spirits of the dead. For the record, I don’t really believe in that kind of thing, but I love Halloween and all that kind of stuff for the humorous side of it all. If we can’t laugh at death, then we’re doomed to be afraid of it.

Fantasy for Organ
based on a fractal algorhythm
free PDF edition :
as performed live in recital by the incomparable Neil Thornock (unfortunately the sound engineer cut of the first couple of seconds of this excellent performance, hence the fade-in) :
as performed by my computer (so you can hear the first few seconds) :
This is another experimental piece that I created using fractal algorhythmic software that no longer exists. It is a fun piece that was featured once on MP3.com when it first came out and has been performed by several organists, including Neil Thornock and Carson P. Cooman.
Send me a recording of your performance and I’ll post it here!

Meditation on 5/4

Meditation on 5/4
as performed by the incomparable Neil Thornock
This is one of my experiments in just intonation. The electronic organ in the recording has been tuned to have perfect major-thirds (5/4) throughout its range, thus there are no octaves. This "meditation" explores a few of the possibilities of this strange tuning system.
Unfortunately, it would be extremely difficult to recreate this piece live. So the recording is all there is of it.
If the term just intonation means nothing to you, I suggest visiting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_intonation. It’s worth learning about.

adventures in a serial slaughterhouse
This piece was written as an assignment during my masters candidacy. It was supposed to incorporate various serial techniques, which it does. Still, I wrote the thing rather ‘tongue in cheek’ and made little jokes in it throughout the way. Some of them are pretty obvious, as in the case of the expression markings; how does one play ‘cyborganically’, for instance? Also, the title was meant to play off the similarity between the names Babbitt (the famed serialist) and Bobbitt. There had been quite a flurry of news activity on the latter just before this piece was written.
The ironic thing is that even though I’m poking fun at serialism here, I actually kind of like the piece, which is why it is here for you to download and (try to) play. It is bear difficult (as most serial pieces are).

This minuet was written for one of my stage productions, but then I decided not to use it for that show. I provide this edition ‘just for fun’ :
